FPS Games are impossible to play now. Need to add joystick or another special control to play these games.
Dave commented:
I think this would work best when we can have custom configured buttons and d-pads on screen. Semi transparent of course...
Robbie commented:
It does run games fluently but they are impossoble to play :(
David Goodloe commented:
This applies to RPG games as well. Better overall keyboard and touchscreen (simulated mouse) control would go a long way to truly allowing PC games to be run from the comfort of your ipad...at work...on the couch at home...wherever.

I think adding semi-transparent D-pad on left side to simulate arrow keys and D-pad + a few customizable keys on right side would do it.
I agree. Like BattleBears and Nova. Nova is good for the customizations to the interface in particular and works really well for fps and I suspect will for all games.
All I would want to do, is launch a full-screen game via Splashtop and then continue gaming on a PC, that would be best for me...
Routing just the sound would be ideal...
@Lech could you explain your idea more? Would you still use the iPad as the input after you continue gaming on the PC? Why launch it from the iPad if you will be playing on the PC itself?
"I think adding semi-transparent D-pad on left side to simulate arrow keys and D-pad + a few customizable keys on right side would do it.
would make this way better for games etc
for normal keys to be customizable to dpads would be great and also the mouse
Playing games like Halflife2, Dead Space or Bioshock on an iPad via virtual D-Pads and additional configurable keys (semi transparent as others mentioned) would be a great idea. I only tested GuildWars so far, which gets stuck - mousewheel scrolling not really working and some virtual buttons are "missing".
That would be really a great addition to Splashtop Remote!
I would like to be able to play games on PC from ps2 emulator. It requires a game-pad to play all games.
I'm playing mostly rpg games/etc. So I think that a semi transparent game-pad would be nice.
Here is how I imagine this feature:
I think that there should be some kind of a button that turns on/off the game-pad function. While the game-pad mode is turned on all controls except the game-pad should be turned of (like keyboard keys / touch-click, etc.)
In "game mode" the mouse should turn into mouse look (so it doesn't auto left click)...on the left of the screen a directional pad for the WASD keys would appear. On the right side would be a few customizable action buttons for jump, shoot, etc...I suppose this would need to be fully customizable with drag and drop interface so we can add any number of keys a game might need for various actions.
<p>http://support.splashtopremote.com/entries/303323-mode-switch<br /><br />
I described here a way to implement the mode that switches from fps to rts to surfing. These modes can be customized from a settings button on the keyboard overlay.
The switch could be the keyboard button itself which when held down and flicked left or up or right would transition the modes between the three styles used.</p>
Im using my Droid 2 android phone to play some ps2 games and when using any of the arrow keys and holding a button such as (left) down. the character only takes one step foward and stops... this currently makes the game unplayable. please fix this keyboard problem. also. using the up and down keys dont work on android. Please fix!! thank you!
This seemed like the best place to mention this, but when playing Civilization 5 I can't click. None of my taps are recognized as a click. It will move the mouse to where I tap, but the mouse will never click. This make the game unplayable and I would love to be able to play Civ 5 on my phone. The game looks great with the app, it just isn't playable.
Oh, and I am using HTC Droid Incredible.
I made a detailed feature request on here that should solve all of the gaming problems http://support-remote.splashtop.com/entries/482599-perfecting-splas... Check it out and see if I missed anything
Can we please get gaming controls soon, in the way that Zyu Syn detailed above? It would add a whole new layer of features to Splashtop Remote.
Any update?
check it out, the easiest way to do this is to add a touchpad option, just like the splashtop touchpad app, only it would be transparent and obviously would take away the two clickers at the bottom. Then the next problem is keyboard functions. To fix this, just add an option to connect a bluetooth keyboard, then players could simply carry around a roll-up bluetooth keyboard in their pocket and be able to game on any hard surface through the internet
i also did a test to see how many different touching points can be sensed on the ipod touch 4g, and it can sense up to 4 different fingers across the screen at the same time, so if that is helpful, oh and the keyboard idea was for an ipod touch or iphone, the ipad might make better use of the drag on controls
actually it might even be 5
It might be worthwhile to check out the ipad game, order and chaos (a wow clone) they have a fantastic way of using controls for their games (they also have a fps game based on black ops and a rts based on star craft. THeir games are decent but the controls are what blew me away, if we could somehow set controls on splashtop to mimic how these games are handled i'd be a happy camper.

They have a scroll wheel at the bottom so you can have multiple buttons without cluttering up the screen the left hand side of the screen is where the virtual joystick is and they have several places you can touch that open up further virtual buttons. Brilliant!
I just thought of a better idea, because having a touchpad on the screen would likely mean most people wouldn't be able to see the game they are playing very well because their hand is in the way, so instead, there should be a backwards L shaped touch pad at the bottom right corner, just thick enough for a finger to comfortably fit, and make sure it has two buttons at both ends of the backwards L, one for right click and one for left click, so you can hold them down in a fps, like if you want to fire an automatic weapon, or some games require you to hold down right click to use your sights. Right click would be on top and left click would be on bottom, i anticipate that for iphones and ipod touch, going about half the screens distance horizontally and vertically should be enough room for the backwards L and then the buttons directly adding on to it would make it go just past halfway. Then for the "moving buttons" you have a customizeable joystick with an eight axis support, not a smooth joystick, because that gives the illusion of complete freedom of movement, when we all know pc games are not like that, with using a keyboard. You can set this joystick to a W A S D or arrow key setup or some other setup you might need. There should now be space enough for two blank buttons on the bottom,(most likely action and reload in fps) and maybe four more up the left side,( throw grenade, crouch, prone, take cover, anything else that you would need quick access to) then you simply move the handy dandy little keyboard tab to the top middle part of the screen. and there you have it, thats my NEW idea
oh and there is probably room for two more buttons on the right side just above the right click button, and when you need to change weapons, you can simply open up the full keyboard and press one of the numbers and get right back in the action!
yeah an alternative to this is to make the WASD buttons be able to hold for a long time. otherwise we need transparent joysticks or dpads
With the wide variety of games, obviously the key is user customizable key overlays, ideally with position control to avoid blocking key UI areas. I have some games where just arrowkeys, spacebar and enter would be enough, which frustratingly is only 2 keys short of what is already provided.
Hey, it's a brilliant idea!!
I just go to onlive.com to check it out, because they will launch their cloud game service for iPad tomorrow with on screen D-pad controller (semi transparent). I imagine, if only Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad have D-pad semi transparent controller, we can setup some kind of private cloud game at home and it will rival OnLive! A value added for Splashtop too! ;)
For user experience matter(simple, easy to use, not burden our tablet limited resources, etc) for customizable keys, I suggest Splashtop Streamer install an joystick/game controller driver for that on screen D-pad. So if we connect to our PC, it detect(emulate) joystick/game controller attached and we can customize the key on almost every game with that (emulated) controller. For the game that don't support key mapping, we can re-map from registry or using 3rd party freeware program similar to this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/map-any-key-to-any-key...
Once again, if our stronger PC can handle the job, we can save our tablet limited resources for another good feature that can't (or not convinience) handled with our PC.
P.S: Compatibility with Fling maybe nice:
http://tenonedesign.com/fling.php
The idea is combine Splashtop Remote Desktop and Joypad(getjoypad.com) in one aplication, so we can LOOK and CONTROL in one device :)
Have and option for 1 or 2 transparent D-pads on the Ipad version of Splashtop Remote Desktop, configurable in terms of position on the screen, mouse and keyboard mapping. Also provide an option to have these available via say the Splashtop Touchpad (either via a second connection to the Splashtop Streamer) or by linking the second iDevice (Iphone/Touch) to the iPad via BlueTooth. So in that instance you would use the iPad purely as the screen and the iPhone as the D-pad controller.
Currently the Splashtop Touchpad cannot be connected at the same time as the Remote Desktop, but if this was added as part of the above (ie/ a second connection to the Streamer) perhaps you could stream a PORTION of the screen (user definable) with the D-pad(s) superimposed.
Thanks
I'm not sure if this is where i need to put this but id like to be able to use my wireless keyboard/mouse to control games. i have an acer i500 with a full size usb port. i also have a wireless mouse/keyboards that come with a wireless usb deal i plug in. works great on the tablet and splashtop...until i start a game. then the mouse goes hyper and literally moves about 2 inches on screen vs the one pixel i actually moved it.
another side note, would it be possible for you guys to look at "sixaxis controller" the app, and make it work with splashtop somehow. i think its on their end more than yours but id love better support for my ps3 controller.
touch controls is what we need most! I've being trying skyrim on iPad and it looks amazing! PS3 controller support would be also great thing to add!!
Its crazy that this thread has been going on this long, and still nothing. This is like, one of the last features it needs. Put 2 analog sticks, and like 10 customizable buttons, and make them all location customizable (example, look at how the ipad game Modern Combat 3 joystick settings are!!) BAM YOUR DONE! comon people get this going
It's indeed crazy! Look at Everyair (no longer availaible) for example! That was great! Unfortunately, it lacked sound and had many bugs, but if you can (some sort of) combine the two would make a killer app!
It's "planned" for AGES now! :(
We need better input options all together, this simple no choice solution with only a trackpad mode and touch mode sucks. We need ways to set custom key-maps.
I know someone who works at the company. The scuttlebutt when I asked him about this was that 'not to expect it anytime soon' and 'no one's really working on it.' Honestly, he didn't even know about this request until I told him about it. He said the primary focus of Splashtop for now is to port it to as many platforms as possible and to focus on other applications, like their whiteboard system for teachers.
hurry up with this feature....
add this to the Android app too. you guys put out Dpad in the THD version. not all of us have tegera 3. lets add it to your other apps as an option to turn on or off. you guys obviously can do it. so lets implement it to all versions. or atleast the HD version. Thank you
Why dont they give us status updates on what they are planning?
There is an app called "Kainy" on the Android market which provides a number of interface elements which you can select among, place in custom locations, and then map to various in-game controls.
The only problem with Kainy is that it is obviously in a VERY early stage of development. It still has a few resolution issues and there are some games that just flat don't like it for some reason. That being said, I did go ahead and get it. I wanted to support the developers since I wasn't seeing much on the Splashtop front. Splashtop is very fast but they don't seem to interested in keeping everyone up-to-date on where they are going or getting support for running non-windowed full screen games in place. It is a shame because Splashtop is really fast and smooth for what I CAN use it for... except for this latest update and the funky software keyboard glitch/issue.
it would be great if we could have a middle click option in there too !...
I would love to play playstation games in an emulator with my iPad. I already have ePSXe in a wineskin wrapper working great, but there really isn't a way to overlay transparent up-down-left-right buttons, start or select, shoulder keys, or triangle-square-cross-circle buttons. Shoulder buttons in the upper corners reachable with thumbs please. :D
As for performance, this keeps up with the emulator perfectly! The picture is clear and sound is even in sync. Already I'm impressed.
Why don't anyone suggest using accelerometer to make easier camera rotation?
As for me, customizable buttons in Splashtop Gamepad THD are done perfectly. But when I move using left hand and rotate using right hand, I just haven't enought thumbs to press 'shoot' button. I think, the obvious solution is to map camera rotation to g-sensor. This feature is implementented in many android/ipad games.
