and you have to have a gmail account, which I don't have. Also Jaff, I tried to go to the apps store and typed in Splashtop update, it couldn't find it. and I am blonde and need you to translate: I have to update the software on the ipad? If so, how. And i have to update my laptop? If so, how.

ok, when you search the app store, do NOT type in Splashtop update, type in just Splashtop. I am updating the ipad now.

If your tablet/phone and computer are connecting to a same router in a local network but computer can't be automatically discovered, it's probably blocked by firewall or not in a same network segment(ex. 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.2.11 are in different segments although they are in a same local network).

Thanks for your help. Although your solution didn't quite fit my problem, it did get me thinking into looking elsewhere for my problem.

• For those who have issues connecting (like i did) and all of you PC / Mac firewalls are correct (as mine were), double check your router. I discovered through delving through my router firewall that it was blocking certain ports. By assigning the port range in my router i can now connect every time, and i do not drop connection.
• I have to admit it to the guys at Splashtop, once you get it to connect, it really is a great piece of software.

The only thing i would like to know now is when working on an ipad is there a way to view the dock on a mac without having to have it locked (i prefer to have mine on automatic hide and show preference)

Yes you are correct, I was connecting through my home network and the hub was the problem.

**To ease people's frustrations regards connecting, there are a couple of things to consider as the majority of the help threads above centre on you computer.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

1) If you are certain your computer firewalls are set to allow access through port range 6783-6785 and have assigned those ports to Splastop then ignore the rest of the help posts above telling you there is a problem with your computer firewall as that will frustrate you further.

2) I am running a 3yr old MacBook with the latest Snow Leopard. The unbuilt firewall does not allow you to open ports manually but does it automatically through selecting applications. If you have done that, then leave it alone as that is all you need to do on your mac. (Not sure about PC but I am running a boot camp partition with Win 7 so will try that today and post later).

3) Right - once you are certain your computer is correct ignore it as your problem is not there. - examine the firewall on your hub as this is where your problem lies. Most hub firewalls are factory set to block types of incoming connections (I didn't know this until I spoke to a Microsoft certified engineer friend yesterday). I am in England and use a proprietary BTHomeHub 2 a piece of junk router but it does the job - they are notoriously bad for allowing incoming connections and have a habit of changing their settings all by them selves. Within the firewall section of the settings ( I am assuming it will be similar with other hubs) you need to set a public IP address and then open the required port range assigning them to an application (manually type in splashtop will do) then reboot your hub.

This is all I have done after days of trying to get it to work. After the reboot, I have been connecting first time and without dropping connection.

1 other question....is there an update yet to allow connection to the mac streamer from outside my home network as i tried it last night and couldn't connect. just checking to see if it is possible. if it is it will most likely be the alternative network automatically assigning the IP to my ipad?

i ask as somewhere above it mentions it can only be done on a PC at the moment...

You are right Dave, that my talk about my Door Stop firewall can be misleading. If people don't have any other firewall than the built-in, and that is setup correctly or turned off (when testing) then they need to look into their router!

Many routers also give you the option of assigning an IP-address as a DMZ (De-militarized Zone) where all connections to this IP will be allowed, no matter what settings the router has.

You could force your computer to always connect with a fixed IP, or make your router always assign a specific IP-address to your machine via DHCP, and then set that IP as a DMZ-zone.

Opening the correct ports should be your priority, but for quick-and-dirty testing, you can set your computers IP as a DMZ witch should allow all connections.

I'll take your feedback into consideration when creating my writeup of all the tips here, and make it more general and then add the Door Stop specifics as just one solution at the end of the doc.

If you want your ipad connect your home computer from an outside network(or via 3g), it's possibel and here are the steps you need to do:

• get your public ip address of your home router, you can visit this site from your home computer to easily get this ip:

• new a profile on ipad and fill above public ip address in IP field, keep others in default, this link tells how to add a new profile on ipad:

• forward 3 ports(default is 6783~6785) on your router to the home computer ip address(the ip displayed on Streamer/Status tab). Usually this is the most difficult part for most users, but you seemed done already :)

We know ports forwarding is too difficult to most of users, to simplify the whole procedures for remote connection, we just designed and released an experimental feature on Internet discovery with a gmail account. it leverages Google Talk capability to get this purpose, it's currently only for iOS+Windows users, Mac version is still under construction. Thanks letting me know it is possible.

After fiddling around with my port settings, i now have my iPad connected over an external network through a BTHomeHub 2 to a MacBook running inbuilt firewall and MacKeeper Virus Protection.

i am currently writing this from my local pub so all seems good so far.

If anybody needs additional support or help let me know. it has taken a couple of days, but i have found the work arounds for the Mac.

OK Just figured it out.. I have to start the app! It wasn't that obvious.  Installing it didn't "start" it and the app was hidden (well, sort of) with all the other apps that come with the mac.  Personally, I'm not a fan of video instruction manuals.  I recommend a page on this site that gives a step by step with pictures tutorial. If there is one -- I'm not able to find it.

My apologise for the delay but i' have been ill.

I have just completed installing the Windows streamer onto my wife's 4 yr old Vista Home Premium laptop.

*Keypoints*

1) having already sorted out the ports on my router (see above posts by me), the splashtop remote app on my iPad found the laptop straight away and allowed me to connect immediately.

2) Check the settings in the firewall...under the tab "EXCEPTIONS" make sure the "NETWORK DISCOVERY" and all of the "SPLASHTOP REMOTE" boxes are checked.

3) If they are,then the issue is definately with your router. If you are not sure how to look into that, either send me your router details and i can have a look, or contact the router support team who will be able to help (hopefully).

I HAD the same issue, being unable to connect from iPad to Win 7 64x, until 3 minutes ago. My PC is at work, and the solution was that I had to have the VPN client running on my iPad, which indicates that our company's server is not letting me through otherwise. Now it works great - I am impressed, Splashtop team! Hope that solution helps others, too.

update the file list in exception list of firewall for latest version by adding new features.Please confirm they are all added into your firewall trusted list if you are using new update v1.4.5.3 or above:

I have just spent a day trying to connect an iPad to Splashtop streamer running on a Mac so that I can connect from outside my home network. It was tough going but it works fine. Here's how I did it.

First my configuration. I have a Mac laptop connected wirelessly to a Time Capsule that is connected by ethernet to a Netgear DGN1000 router connected to Orange broadband (in UK). First important point: my router does not have  a fixed IP address - this is allocated dynamically by Orange. Second important point: all configuration is done using the router - the TimeCapsule should be configured in bridge mode and left alone. I suspect the same applies if you are using Airport extreme attached to a router.

Because I do not have a fixed IP address I needed to obtain a hostname from www.dyndns.com. This links the actual static IP address used by my ISP to a host name that can be used by Splashtop remote. See later. DynDns should be your first stop before proceeding. 

To configure the router proceed as follows.

1. Log in to the router admin by entering 192.168.0.1 in a browser window. The default username and password are admin and password.

2. Click on services in the left hand column. Click the add custom service button and in the screen that appears enter a name (anything will do), leave type as TCP, and set the start and end ports to 6783 to 6785, then click apply.

3. Click on Firewall rules in LH column. The service you just entered should appear in the drop down menu (unless you have multiple services). Leave action as allow always. In the send to Lan server you need to enter the private IP address of the computer running the streamer. You can find this by going to the network preferences and it will be on the first screen (mine starts with 192). Leave the remaining fields alone. Click apply.

4. Click on Dynamic DNS in LH column. Check use a Dynamic DNS service. Then in the remaining fields enter your host name (something like myhost.dyndns-hone.com where myhost is your chosen name), username and password. Click apply. Setting this up enables your router to notify DynDns when your public IP address is changed by your ISP.

5. If the firewall is turned on on your Mac then you need to add Splashtop Streamer to it to allow incoming requests. You will find this under the security icon in system preferences.

6. In Splashtop remote you should add a new computer and where it asks you for an ip address you should enter the hostname obtained from DynDns and not the IP address displayed by Splashtop streamer (because it is private to your network).

I think that just about covers it. My advice is that you should proceed with great caution if you are not used to changing network settings like this. You should certainly write down each step as you make it, recoding old values so that you can go backwards if necessary.

You done all the best settings on your networking environment to fully expand the capability of Splashtop Remote, we are also so sorry to spend you much time to figure all these out.

The most difficult for us is to lead users to forward ports on their routers because tones of router brands have different settings about it. But you not only conquered this but also solved the dynamic IP address issue by using dyndns.

To ease this process, We have released an Internet discover feature for iOS+Windows Streamer users, and working on Mac Streamer. It's coming soon, hope this can eliminate most Mac users' pain on this topic.

This problem just started with the new Windows Client - 1.5.0.1.   It attempts to connect and then the message that it cannot connect appears

I rebooted, disabled Norton firewall & Intrusion detection (I noticed in the history that blocks occurred at the time I attempted to use Splashtop from my iPad.  It still did not connect.)  It now works locally and remotely again after doing the following:

1.  uninstall the Windows client

2.  reboot  (just in case)

3. install a freshly downloaded copy of the client

I believe that something didn't get done properly with the Windows update because it was working properly before.  Although I am running the latest version of the iPad client, I didn't change anything on the iPad to resolve the problem.

I hope this helps others who may also be having trouble.

Thanks for the info Beryl. I was FINALLY able to connect to my home computer from work after doing a clean install of the Streamer, then it stopped working again.

I've got to say that Splashtop is one VERY flaky app. Jaff, I really hope you guys get it together at some point. Your software shows a lot of promise but it's definitely not ready for primetime.

We found another gmail login fail issue on Mac Streamer caused by 2-step authentication, will fix in next update.

We do keep collecting all your feedbacks on Splashtop Remote, all your precious comments will be the important source of improving our product. Hope you all can keep telling us what you want and the problem what you got.

t worked fine when I first got it then quit. tried deleting and reinstalling. I can find my computer and it works fine when on y own wifi network but now at soon as I leave my house. thats when I really need it.

Opening the ports on my Netgear router has sorted out the problem for me to. I can now connect my Ipad to my Mac Book Pro using my home wireless. Thanks @keith. Still cannot login using the Gmail account. One step at a time :-)
