alan
asked this on January 11, 2011 16:41

hi, I am trying to connect my iPad and be able to use it outside my home network but can not seem to figure it out. Is there an easier way to do it as I am not understanding the instructions on the site. Anything is appreciated. I have enjoyed using the program with in my home but just need to be able to access my computer from school. Thanks, Alan

Hello. I am in need of some help. The remote application works great when I'm at my office and on the same network as my computer. My issue is when I'm anywhere but at my office. It says that it cannot reach my computer. The computer that I am connecting to does not sleep and is very easy to connect to when am at work. I would greatly appreciate your help. The main reason I bought this application was to access my work computer when I'm out of town on business. Thank you. Kris

I had the the same issues as everyone else but FINALLY got my router configured correctly  ( the link @Eric has for how to connect over 3G was extremely helpful and straight forward) and I also got my sound to work, once I uninstalled PocketCloud and TightVNC from my desktop.  I haven't had any disconnect issues but if I did, I can log into my computer with LogMein, (a similar program like Splashtop but without the sound) and check to make sure Splashtop disconnects.

I love the app and it runs great over 3G, as well as wifi.

@Carlos: we have just released a new version for Android, can you check if latest version helps/improves the connectivity by any chance? (see: Android version 1.1.5.2 released )

@lars: have you tried other connection methods outside of home network besides BT Internet tether or Personal Hotspot share from your iPhone? The lost connection is probably due to carrier, as the video / audio streams are unable to setup. We have tried to improve this issue and hopefully will provide in the update once QA, Apple approves the submission. - Stay tuned!

Thanks and hope this helps.

Hi all.

I run a home network with two computers, a PS3, an iPod, iPhone and a nokia. All works well. I have static ip's set for everything and portforwarding set up for things like skype and online gaming.

I currently set up portforwarding for splashtop (good info can be found at http://portforward.com/  if you are not sure).

The iPhone connects to the computer using the internal ip with no problems now that the server has been upgraded to version 1.3.5.4 but it still wont connect from outside the home network.

A port scan of port 6783 using the 'shields up' service at grc.com shows that it is open to the internet but the iPhone app still wont connect.

I know I've done everything correctly because the other programs and servers I run are working fine (skype, bitorrent etc). I've turned off my computer's software firewall and rely on the hardware firewall on my router (which has been configured correctly).

I'm not what help you can offer as I believe your program just doesn't work as advertised. The port is open to the internet but your app just wont connect.

@Choff,

Sorry we getting back to you so late.  For quicker responses please open a ticket.  Anyways, for your case, please make sure to open and forward all 3 consecutive ports.  Sounds like you are using the default port, so 6783, 6784, and 6785.

@Andrea/Summy, you can enter in a name address where you would normally enter in a number IP address.  Several users have successfully used dyndns.org in this manner.

I can not get my remote server to access pc from outside my home. I have configured my network settings to the best of my abilities (the instructions did not specify my type of router; AT&T 2Wire) and there were some discrepancies or incompatibilities that with the video tutorials and instructions, so I'm not sure if my settings are correct. I would appreciate it very much if someone who is an AT&T DSL user could let me know the exact steps and settings I need to follow to program my remote to access my pc from my iPhone from a remote location

Just some feedback.

My setup is an old HP laptop running windows 7 ultimate with stock (default) setup (router and streamer).  My iphone and ipad connect to my PC fine via home wireless network and via 3G.  When connecting via 3G, I can connect via my iphone or my ipad (using iphone hotspot). I can also use my work internet to connect.  I only notice connection problems like lost connections or a blur app window (that I can fix by lowering and raising the app) when I enable dual CPU in my bios.  This problem goes away if i disable dual CPU.  Hope this helps Support in solving some connection problems.  regards.

I am trying to connect remotely and im getting " can not reach xxx.x.xx.xxx" when it is scanning for my pc. Here is what i have done already: I have desktop and ipad software downloaded on 7/6/11 I have setup port fowarding for the three consecutive port range via my linksys router I have successfully connected to my pc while on the local network (automaticlly found it) I have other ports open for similar software (remote music server using ipad app for example) that works fine I have double checked the remote ip against my remote camera ipad app that is also working correctly. In the port fowarding, i used the local ip that was displayed in ipconfig (the pc ip) where appropriate. What else can i do? By the way, i see you mention opening a ticket in another comment....you sure do make it hard to find the link to open a ticket!!! Mike

@Rick usery, or who are using 3G for remote connection,

Have you logged gmail account in successful on the computer side?

If yes and you still can't connect from your home, another reason is :

using 3G network sometimes the 3G signal looks excellent but you will not easily realize how many clients are sharing this bandwidth at that moment. In this case, you might try the connection later after peak time or try to connect other network and see if any difference.

I can see my PC on my iPad (from a 3G connection), it tries to connect but then just comes back and says it has lost connection. When I try the same on a laptop using the windows client and the same 3g connection (iPhone hotspot), it works every time. It has worked occasionally on the iPad via 3G, but it is not reliable. The iPad connects ok on the LAN.

I am with bell.ca.

My modem is connected to my home PC via Ethernet cable. (Secured, firewall-ed, virus scan, etc  just the default settings.)

The modem is the standard Bell issue wireless "2 Wire" model - band is "G".

My home PC have internet discovery enabled.

When connecting to my home PC via 3G through personal hotspot (OR via my work wifi), it works 100% of the time. (Slow with lot of lag of course)

When connecting to my home PC when ipad is on the same network at home, the screen sometime shows up "smear" like. - A refresh will clear it up.

At work, my iphone, ipad connects to my work PC 100% of the time perfectly.

Conclusion for me: the time-out function works fine. Give the system time to refresh before connecting to your PC.  My home wifi is the problem - too slow, not enough capacity or my home PC is too old and too slow!  Hope this can help.

PS. I have not try enabling internet discovery on my work PC cause I can not explain to the IT department the security used.

@support--yes, I do have the internet discovery and I have followed the port forwarding tutorials. However, I am not much of a techie and I am sick and tired of being "tutorialed" out. My point is, is that if I pay for a product I don't want to have to make 1,000 different configurations in order for it to work properly.

The program has no issues finding my computer from outside the network. But it won't connect. I am running Windows XP. Again, I have had this product for several months and even when I did the port forwarding I could never connect from outside. And now, I cannot even connect inside my network. I just keep getting the message that it could not connect with error messages in the bottom left hand corner. Please resolve this issue for me or point me to a way where I can obtain a refund! Thank you.

I am just a user of the app.....

I am under the impression that if you use internet discovery, you do not NEED port forward. Can someone confirm this please?  In addition, I have learned to let the app time out on the scanning process (the top title bar goes from (Scanning for Computers” to “Splashtop Remote) before I select a computer. This tends to give me less problems.

I'm having the same issue as Ekklessia Boy! I'm able to connect at home, but once I use the internet discover, it fails to connect. Let me emphasize on the fact that it has no problem logging in the google account both on the streamer and app end.  On the app side, it also has no problem finding the pc using the internet discovery. When I tap the icon to connect with the streamer the app shows the running loop for 20 sec. and pops up a sign saying that it can't connect to my computer with s=03 E=00000000 shown on the bottom left corner.

I'm using the chinese version of the app(1.5.5.1) and the lastest streamer on my chinese windows 7 as well.

Please Help!

@Steven, Sam, Kent, Damian,

When you use Internet discovery feature to remotely connect your computer but fail, please try the following suggestions:

1. If your tablet/phone is far from the router around you(different routers may have different distance limitation), the signal will be weak and easy to cause connection fail. Try nearer case to see if it's better.

2.basically, use Internet discovery to remotely connect your computer won't need to do ports forwarding, but we also got user feedback they only can connect after open ports.

3.check the router which your computer is connecting, make sure the firewall on it is disabled.

4.uninstall then reinstall Splashtop Remote app on ipad side

5.before making connection, please logoff gmail then login again on ipad side

6.If you are using 3G network, sometimes the 3G signal looks excellent but you will not easily realize how many clients are sharing this bandwidth at that moment. In this case, you might try the connection later after peak time or try to connect other network and see if any difference.

7.lower your computer resolution to 800x600 to see if there's any difference

I have to concur, unfortunately.  No matter if I use the gmail login method or forward the ports or both, I simply cannot connect to my office computer from my Ipad unless the ipad is sitting on the desk with the office computer connecting to the same network.  That is not much use to me.

There are other problems as well.  I installed the streamer on my wife's laptop.  If my ipad is connected via wifi somewhere, it will usually (but not always) connect to her laptop.  Turn off wifi and use 3G on my Ipad and try to connect, and the ipad app crashes.  Every time.

Ok... I worked it out so I should share. I could connect via my local wifi but not from a wifi somewhere else to my Home network. The solution? I logged into my home PC from my iPad using the wifi at my office (via gmail) and had someone at home see what was happening. They told me an alert came up for unauthorized access and they ticked "allow always" and the problem was solved. Easy.

@Jeff Brock,

Could you confirm your office IT if there's a strict security policy on the network and most of ports are blocked?

For the 3G issue, our engineering is trying to improve it, please lower the resolution on the laptop to decrease the traffic size to be a workaround for 3g connection.

@Jaff. Yes my antivirus software wasn't allowing access but the error message wouldn't be there when I got home so it was a bit of a mystery until I had someone sit in front of the computer and tell me what was going on. It was a simple tick of the box to allow the application access.

It's defintely not my antivirus.  Even if disabled, connection does not work.  Work IT has redirected the ports to my IP, but that did not help. I suspect the firewall needs the processes associated with this program listed in the excluded list.  I sent an email to splashtop support asking what needs to be listed there, but got no reply.

I don't understand why this is an issue with splashtop and nobody else.  With gotomypc or logmein, I have had zero problems connecting.

Hi Splashtop support, I left a message on this thread some time ago, it is as follows: "Hi, I used to be able to connect to my computer via 3G with no problems using Internet discovery through my Gmail account. Anyway, I'm still having the exact same problem, none of the updates have managed to solve it as yet. I'm certain that I've done everything according to your instruction, because as I said before in my prior message "it used to work perfectly over 3G but since the update it has stopped". I ask once again.......HELP!!! (i realise that i seem to be in the minority when it comes to unsatisfied customers and believe me when i say that I am reluctant to uninstall the app, because when it worked properly, it worked like a dream)!!! (however, don't be fooled....I CAN, AND I WILL)!!!! I look forward to a solution.

@Andre, and those who got the same issue,

So sorry to give you the supportless feeling by our carelessness. About "3G hard to connect" issue(or fail to connect), we did spend much efforts on it and just got a feedback from our engineering.

We found a bug, it'll cause the "time out" very short, so if the networking gets any unstable esp. via 3g, Splashtop Remote will fail to connect or disconnect itself immediately. It'll be fixed in next release, please stay tuned.

Thanks for your patience and so sorry to cause this inconvenience on the remote connection case!

@Andre and all using 3g,

If you have tried the latest iOS client version v1.6.5.2 (work with latest Streamer v1.6.5.3 for Windows and v1.6.5.1 for Mac) but still fail, please try more time slots(day and night...) and locations to see if the successful rate has increased.

This version improved the connection rate but can't help if the real available bandwidth of 3g is small or unstable. It heavily depends on the 3g carriers. Here are some useful suggestions could be used when your 3g real available bandwidth is not good:

1.lower screen resolution to 1024x768 or 800x600 on Streamer side

2.use "video mode" instead of "sharp mode" in default (3 fingers tap on ipad can change it)

3.connect your computer by LAN cable instead of wifi

I can't get my iPad to find my pc unless it is on the same network & not in hibernation. What am I doing wrong? Won't splashtop take my computer out of hibernation when I'm not around? Does my gmail account have to be open? Help me; I'm new to this!

@Debbie,

If your ipad is not on the same network with your computer, please enable Internet discovery feature with a same gmail account on both ipad and computer.

If your computer is in hibernation, it needs Wake on LAN feature to awaken it first before making a connection. This link tells more info about how to do and limitations.

Please note: WoL doesn't work for the remote connection case by enabling Internet discovery with a gmail account. Currently, it works good in a local network(PC).

@Raymundo,

If you can't connect your ipad to your computer via 3g but able to connect from another wifi, you can try our latest Windows Streamer v1.7.0.1 and enable a hidden feature for connecting with a small bandwidth.

@Raymundo,

Could you have a try and share us the result? This feature is mainly for unstable network signal.

thanks.

I have a Mac running version 1.7.0.4 of Splasdot Steramer. On my iPad I have Splashdot version 1.7.0.2. When I enter my Gmail details into Internet Discovery on both devices my iPad shows my computer is found automatically when on my local WiFi network and I'm able to connect with no problem. When I switch to 3G or a different WiFi network my computer is found in Splashtop but when I go to connect I get the message Splashtop Remote cannot connect to your computer. There is also a code in the lower left corner of my iPad screes showing S=00 E=00000000.

After this i tried the manual way by entering my IP address and forwarding my ports  I am able to connect from my local WiFi, 3G and another WiFi network.

I tried to then connect using the Internet Discovery with my ports forwarded but still the same. Not able to connect except when on my local Wifi Network even though Splashtop says it has found my computer.

Please help.

Hate to pile on, but I start with my iPad2 sitting right next to my PC laptop.  I allow my home Linksys Router to connect to my laptop yet direct my iPad2 to my T-Mobile Broadband card (4G) since that's what I'll be walking away from the laptop with.  Splashtop Remote (iPad2) cannot find the PC.

(Yes, when both the iPad2 and PC are linking to my Linksys Router, it works fine, but like everyone else says ... that's not the intent)

I tried adding the 3 ports.

One more for the pile of connection problems...

Until this Monday I have connected to my computer at home both via my iPhone and my work computer without any problem at all, but this Monday problems started. I have made no changes at all with either of the devices, no updates, settings, nothing, but no all of a sudden I can't connect from work.

It still works as usual from iPhone, but why doesn't it work from my computer at work? Sometimes I manage to get one very compressed image through, but I can't seem to do anything at all. Today I tried pushing the Windows-button, but nothing happened. I disconnected and reconnected and after a few minutes I got another very compressed image where the Windows start menu was open, so I know some information goes back and forth.

I'm using the discovery method with Gmail and it has allways worked like a charm!

I don't know what to do?!

I just figured out my issue connecting from the outside. My cable modem is connected to a Vonage router. That feeds to a Netgear 1Gbps LAN. After all the troubleshooting steps, I still had the same problem where the application would quit as soon as it connected. After putting the Netgear router into the DMZ in the Vonage router settings, I am now fully functional.

Hi all,

We recently found a connection issue about Internet discovery via gmail. It's caused by a google server library update, that's also why you did not update any release but suddenly got this issue. We'll fix it in our next update, it's coming soon, please stay tuned.

Thanks for your patience.
