How do I connect to my home computer from outside by opening ports on the home router?

If you want to connect to your home computer when away from home, via an outside network or via 3G connection from your tablet/phone, you will need the following setup: (Requires some technical know-how...)

  1. Allow Splashtop Remote as a trusted application program to your third-party firewall software application:

Check out a video guide from: Firewall Settings for Splashtop Remote.

If you have other third-party anti-virus/firewall software applications (e.g., ESET NOD, McAfee, Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc...) installed in your computer, please configure to add Splashtop Remote into the allowed program list (or, depending on your third-party firewall software application, you may need to open three TCP ports. The default TCP ports are:  6783, 6784 and 6785).

note.gif  NOTE:  Firewall settings may differ depending on the firewall software you use and we can only provide guides to some of them but are unable to provide a detailed guide for all.
  2. Set up your home wireless router for port forwarding.  Please reference the following step-by-step tutorial guide:

Mac lover:  Setup Apple Extreme for port forwarding.
Windows lover or non-Apple wireless router:  Setup Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router for port forwarding.
  3. On your tablet/phone, create a computer profile for your home computer:  How do I add or specify a computer I want to connect to?

note.gif  NOTE:  For the IP address, you need to specify the external IP address you recorded from Step 2 or the DynDNS if you have it set up.

After you have gone through all the above-mentioned steps and their tutorial guides, you should be able to connect your tablet/phone to your home computer from outside via either remote networks or 3G.

note.gif  Good news:   PortForward  has created a tutorial section for setting up port forwarding for Splashtop Remote on many routers.  If you need assistance in Step 2, please check it out here:  PortForward.com free help guide for Splashtop Remote.  (Clicking the link near the top right corner can skip that ad.)

The PortForward (Good News) is toooo much and toooo confusing for the average user.

Can you simplify things a litter regarding setting up port forwarding.

I have added the ports to my Netgear router, but my phone will still not connect to my PC from 4G.  It connects fine within my WiFi.  Any ideas?  Thanks

When I'm at home (where the laptop is) it works fine, I can not connect when I'm at my office.

Have disabled windows firewall, my routers firewall, forwarded the ports as near i can figure (using a belkin router, it asks for incoming and private ports i just put the same numbers for both) and still connection fails over 3g or wifi from anywhere else.  Works fine at home, but if i'm home i can just use my computer...

I have tried everything as well and can not connect from the internet.  I am using my Samsung Facinate on the Verizon 3g network.

I'm on the Razr running gingerbread and get repeated connects/disconnects when attempting to connect to a puter signed up for the auto internet locate. If I type in my IP of the router and use DMZ, I get a connection without any trouble. Of course, I don't have a wan static IP so this will be an issue. I'd love to use the internet locate feature, but it seems to only work if I'm on a wifi network. The 3/4G radio just drops out otherwise.

When I first bought this app, I was able to connect over the Internet.

I have not been able to connect over the internet since they started using the gmail log-in - because the desktop app will not connect to gmail.

The support on this website is terrible. I'm going to post a very negative review on iTunes. You should do the same.

    Hi all,

The latest Windows Streamer v1.7.5.4 helps a lot on remote connection via 3g, welcome to have  a try.

Please remember to enable option "Optimize for your network" from iOS app/Settings.

    @David Thayer,

So I can't seem to find my computer.  I even signed up for the internet discovery using my email and still can not find my computer.  I even put in my specific IP address and still nothing.  My iPad is working just fine, however my iPhone is unable to find anything.  Any suggestions.  Its not my security code or password either.

wow, wth?  the whole reason i got this was so I could access my laptop from my tablet when I am away; what's the point if it only works when I'm home where I can just get up and walk to my computer and use it? Maybe I'm missing something?

    @Keith Wilbur ,Glenn Saaman,

Please confirm the following conditions if they are satisfied:

1.before making connection remotely, please make sure both tablet/phone and computer were logged-in with a same gmail successfully

2.please make sure your computer is not in sleeping when you are attempting to connect to

3.if you have logged in your gmail on your device, ip address is not neccessary to input, please try to delete all old profiles and let your device automatically scan again.

4.clear cache on ipad/iphone before making connection is good to get successful connection.

    1. Double-press the Home button on the iPad/iPhone.
    2. A bar will open at the bottom of the iPad/iPhone.
    3. Long-tap (press) an icon.  The icons will then start "shaking" and will contain a '-' symbol.
    4. Tap the '-' symbol on each icon individually until all icons are removed.
    5. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen, and try to connect again.

Tried all of the above. V. 1.7.5.4, logged into Gmail on iMac and iPad, still unable to connect via the Internet. No problem connecting remotely at home, over the same network, but unable to successfully connect via Internet using either wired, wireless, or (most frequently) mobile Hot Spot.  Message simply states 'Cannot connect to your computer'

Anything else worth trying? Although I find Splashtop very impressive, it does not hold much use if I can only access when at home an on the same network.

    Thanks.

I am not willing to pay $30 for a port guide setup!  This information should be free & included when we purchase your products.  Shame on You!

So much for ethical business practises. i am not willing to deal with gmail either. I am not helping google spy on me.
