Here are some suggestions for you to try:

  1. Launch the Sound settings from the Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > Sound).
  2. On the Playback tab, select Speakers and click on the Properties button.

  3. On the General tab of the Speakers Properties dialog, make sure the Device usage selection is set to Use this device (enable).

  4. In the Speaker Properties dialog, navigate to the Advanced tab and change the Default Formatsetting to either of the following:
    • 44100 Hz (CD Quality) (recommended)
    • 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)

note.gif  NOTE:  The quoted frequencies are the ones that are supported by Splashtop Remote.
  5. On the Playback tab, select Speakers and click on the Configure button.

  6. Configure the Audio channels to Stereo or Stereo Mix and follow through the remaining setup.

    @Rob,

If your iphone4 and ipad2 connect to a same computer, but only ipad2 doesn't work, please have a reference on this link to adjust the settings on ipad2, it may help.

I am having similar problems. I have SplashTop Remote Desktop Ver. 1.7.0.2 on my iPhone 4S. It streams video of my laptop perfectly however there is no sound being produced by my iPhone 4S.

My laptop is a 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium, HP Pavilion. The Speakers are via IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. When I'm using Splashtop on my phone, both the laptop and phone are muted. The streamer on my laptop is version 1.7.0.4

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Had same Problem on my Laptop:
    Windows 7-64bit, Conexant SmartAudio HD,
    Ipad2 with IOS 5.01 & Splashtop HD

I dare say I know my way around in Windows, tried everything mentioned in other posts and more - almost went nuts about it ;-)
Issue was finally resolved with your answer in link referenced above:

    d.  Flick from left to right along the bottom of the screen.  A sound control bar will display:

     mute-002.png

    e.  If there is a slash across the Speaker button as shown above on the left, tapping it can enable your sound function again.

So with my Ipad 2 being almost brandnew and more or less in a virgin 'out of the box'  state, that seems to be a a necessary step under current IOS 5.01 to enable sound.
May I suggest that you include this part of your reply  as a hint  on your start page ?

I sort of have this problem. Every time I connect splashtop it mutes my computer. It's not such a huge problem, because I can just unmute it, but it's really annoying. How can I stop it from doing this?

Oh actually, what it's doing is playing sound through the device. How do I get it to keep the sound on the computer?

Even with the above setup, my Splashtop Streamer still has the dropdown menu to select an audio device disabled.

No sound for me.  It used to work.  Applied a Splashtop update when suggested without paying much attention.  Now no sound.  I wish Splashtop wasn't such a Science Fair project to keep working!
