Why is there no sound on my Mac? I just hear noise coming from my Mac's microphone.

Please make sure to install Soundflower to your Mac.  This may be the main reason why sound is not working properly.

  1. Download and install Soundflower.

    Soundflower can be downloaded from: http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/list

  2. Verify that Soundflower is correctly installed.

    Open System Preferences and select Sound as shown below.

    System_Preferences_Sound.png

    The "Input" and "Output" of the Sound settings should contain Soundflower (2ch) as shown below:

    Sound_input_Soundflower.png
  3. Please make sure Input level is at maximum like above picture, it may help if you still can't get sound.

    Sound_output_Soundflower.png

  4. Verify the Soundflower setting options on the menu:   Make sure the Soundflower (2ch) property is set to None (OFF) as shown below.  Please note that these settings will only be available if you have installed the entire Soundflower application.

    Soundflower_menu_bar.png

  5. Verify that the "When a remote client connects, redirect all sound to the client, and mute this computer" checkbox is enabled in the Settings tab of the Splashtop Remote Streamer box as shown below.

    Splashtop_Remote_Streamer_settings.png

After you have completed the four steps above, you should be able to hear the desired audio on your tablet/phone instead of your Mac's microphone noises.

note.gif  NOTES:

  • If you want sound to be played on both your Mac and your tablet or phone, make sure the option "When a remote client connects, redirect all sound to the client, and mute this computer" checkbox is enabled (checked) as shown above in Step 5.
  • Then in the options available on the "Soundflower Settings menu," make sure the Soundflower (2ch) property is set to "Built-in Output" (refer Step 3), or select Built-in device in Step 2 Input/Output.
  • If you un-check the "When a remote client connects, redirect all sound to the client, and mute this computer" (refer to Step 4), and have not properly installed Soundflower('Internal microphone' selected in Sound/Input tab during Splashtop session), then you may still hear Mac's microphone noises on your tablet/phone.

    @Lou Parry,

    Soundflower is still necessary to stream sound to your ipad or other devices when your mac is connected. But only the driver will  be installed from current installer of Splashtop Streamer for Mac. If you have installed a full Soundflower, you can remove it and re-install the driver from Splashtop Streamer again.

    @wendell,

    If the settings on step#2 and step#4 were properly setup like above, please check this link(item#2 for ios) and confirm the ipad side sound settings is correct.

    I have checked all of this, it all looks correct, but still no sound. I just installed Splashtop for the first time on Ipad 1 and Lion. Sound on Lion is muted but there is no sound on ipad. I'm certain that it is not muted.

    @Jay,

    When you connect to your Mac, the default action is to mute the Mac while sound is streamed to the Playbook.  If you want sound to come through the Mac at the same time, you can change the settings in the Streamer app running on your Mac (Settings Tab->1st radio option)

    No need to install Soundflower, like Jaff mentioned above.

    If you have a problem with sound after disconnecting, please check System Preferences->Sound.  "Internal Speakers" should be selected.

    Is the net effect of what is written here, that Sound Flower MUST be installed to get the audio stream on an Ipad 2 which is receiving a vide clip from VLC running on MacBook Snow Leopard?  I am running something called  Boom and my audio passes through that as it performs various audio functions.

    No, I checked the article but as I already said, the iPad itself is not muted.

    @Tom,

    During connectoin, please confirm the output is "soundflower(2ch)" like the screenshot montioned in above article?

    Please change to it if it's not. Basically, Splashtop Remote will automatically switch back "built-in" speaker if you disconnect normally. (ex. press Home button)

    I can't get any sound to come through on my new 3rd generation iPad although everything else works fine. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it too but no joy. It works perfectly, with sound, on my old iPad 2 so there is nothing wrong with the streamer setup on my Mac. Is there an update to the iPad app coming to address this and to enhance the app to allow better screen resolutions now that the new iPad supports twice the resolution?

    @Tom,  The Soundflower driver is included in the Splashtop Streamer installation.  You do not need to explicitly install Soundflower.  However, as you figured out the audio is streamed through Soundflower to the ipad, so if you are using a different audio setting, the audio will not be streamed to your client.

    (blocked message from user--Tom)

    Hi Victor,

    Sorry I got that wrong. Sound is coming from Mac, but not from iPad when
    clip is playing on Mac. Using a different product (VLC Streamer) I do get
    the sound on the iPad. Can you explain why I DO NOT get the sound on the
    iPad (but do see the video clip) when I use Splashtop and start VLC to run
    on the Mac. As I say the sound is available on the Mac, just not on the
    iPad.

    Best Regards

    Tom

    I have also been having audio problems connecting my iPad 3 to my MacBook pro. I can confirm that you do not need to install sunflower with the latest version of splashtop. If you check you sound sys prefs pane after installing splashtop you should see two sound flower devices. What fixed things for me is that I finally noticed that the mute checkbox was selected for the sound flower 2ch device (i have no idea why it was selected). Once I cleared this checkbox audio is now correctly streaming to my iPad 3 and all is good with the world!

    ipad 3 running splashtop 1.7.5.4 sound was working fine but seems to have broken around the same time I updated my imac to 10.7.4 . Im not certain that caused it but I have tried all the steps I could find to do and I cant get sound to stream anymore. Help!

    When Splashtop starts it disables all sound from the iMac.  The video streams correctly but silently.  I have followed every step I could find but nothing works.

    I've installed Soundflower and configured it according to your instructions.  I've checked that the Mac Preferences are configured as per instructions. I've checked the iPad, nothing works.  This problem also occurs on my iPhone.

    All of my iDevice software is up to date.

    Please help.

    Installing soundflower only makes sound stop working completely on my Mac (which works fine without it), I still can't have any audio on my TF101. Great product otherwise... just annoying not to have any sound.

    It appears that very many people are having difficulties with this product, especially those wanting to stream sound to their iPads from their Macs.  There appears to be some difficulties regarding Soundflower which some say requires installation of Soundflower while others say that SF is installed as part of the installation of Splashtop Streamer (NOT true in my case).  However more iportantly, in my experience you cannot connect away from your 'home' netwrok, and even in case of 'home' network connection works unpredictably i.e. at some times and not others and for no apparent reason.  I cannot afford to wait until you have sorted there problems out and hereby request refund to my account of the purchase costs.  I do not intend to install another product (Soundflower) just so that your product can stream music to y iPad, as you claim that it can do, a claim so far found to be untrue. Other potential users beware if streaming music form Mac is important to you.  You can stream the video, but not the sound in my experience.  I can recommend the VLC Streamer product however. for streaming video clips.

    I had some problems with streaming audio to my ipad as well. It worked for a long time but suddenly there was no more sound coming from my ipad. After reinstalling both splashtop and soundflower for more than 5 times I managed to get it working, again.

    The "Input Volume" level of the virtual soundflower device (see screenshot 2 in the article above) was not at the maximun level. After putting it to the maximum level the sound on my ipad was back!!!

    So please check that setting if you have trouble getting your sound from your mac to splashtop remote. Maybe the article might say "make sure input level is at maximum" might help some guys to save some trouble in the future!

    Thank you very much for such a great tool - and now I can go watch some movies on my ipad (WITH sound, yeah!)

    I thought I read somewhere that Soundflower is no longer needed by Splashtop Remote Desktop Client.  Is that true.  Can I delete it from my files?
